Why menopause is hitting women harder than ever before.

I’ve been reading a fascinating new paper (pre peer review) which focuses on the “Evolutionary mismatch in Gen X women” of which I am one, and so are many of my clients.

We are the first generation to hit the menopause transition since our society changed so dramatically.  We have bodies designed for natural light, real, whole food, regular movement, and downtime for proper recovery.  Yet here we are, with a mental load that never turns off, juggling multiple roles, not getting enough sleep, sitting more, moving less, eating processed foods and exposed daily to hundreds of chemicals that didn’t even exist when we were born.

It’s hit hard.

The paper explains that midlife for Gen X women is a biological “inflection point” where several things converge.

It’s not just hormones, and not just ageing, it’s the collision of modern life and the way our bodies were designed to function.

• hormone changes (perimenopause/menopause)

• accumulated stress load over decades

• metabolic strain (blood sugar, weight, energy)

• changes in brain energy and cognition

Our amazing bodies coped with this for years, but as the hormones decline the decades of stress, lifestyle load and metabolic strain take their toll. The body no longer has the capacity to compensate.

This helps explain why so many women experience:

• fatigue that doesn’t always make sense

• weight gain, especially around the middle, that just won't shift

• brain fog and reduced focus

• poor sleep

• feeling overwhelmed or wired and tired

• increased anxiety and depression

It also explains why Gen X women are the ones who are bringing menopause out of the closet.

So what does this mean for us?

Although modern medicine would have us treat all those things as symptoms, the paper offers a different perspective - that many of these changes are actually protective responses to perceived stress and energy scarcity, even when we are eating enough. Our amazing bodies are doing what it takes, and adapting to the long term overload.

If this model is right - which I feel it most definitely could be based on my education and experience with myself and my clients - then quick fixes won’t work and the band aid approach of medications are not the solution.

Instead we need to focus on restoring the foundations of our health by:

• reducing stress load

• supporting circadian rhythm and sleep

• rebuilding metabolic flexibility

• nourishing the gut and microbiome

• creating a lifestyle the body recognises as “safe”

This supports what I have been advocating for sometime. Midlife is not the downhill. It’s the moment where your body says: “Something needs to change - it’s time to look after YOU!"

When you listen and respond to your own needs, this can become the most powerful turning point for your health, energy, and clarity - fuelling and empowering you for your amazing second act

My coaching and programs are designed to support all these areas - if you are ready to draw the line in the sand and to start nurturing and restoring your health, book yourself a free wellness chat.

Science shows that how well you look after yourself in this transition has a huge impact on your health in old age. It's time to move self care to the top of your to do list!
